CROTON-ON-HUDSON – A suspected grease fire spread into the ceiling of the Samurai Sushi & Steakhouse restaurant Tuesday, fire officials said.
“We had what started as a grease fire in the kitchen and when I arrived, we had fire through the roof, about 20 feet in the air,” Croton Assistant Fire Chief Matt Mansfield said.
Firefighters stretched two lines and fought the 352 S. Riverside Ave. fire from inside, quickly knocking down the flames, he said. No one was injured.
The response to the 11:05 a.m. blaze was fast, in part, because the Croton Fire Department has a firehouse on Wayne Street, just around the corner from the restaurant.
Westchester County fire investigators were called in, although the blaze is not suspicious.
“At this point, it appears accidental, what started as a cooking fire,” Mansfield said. “But Cause and Origin is here and they’ll make the final determination.”
Croton firefighters were assisted at the scene by crews from Ossining and Buchanan, while crews from Mohegan Lake and the Montrose VA Fire Department stood by for Croton, even handling a second call while this was in progress, Mansfield said.
