1-Alarm Kitchen grease Fire Damages Mexican Restaurant

A one-alarm fire caused damage but no injuries at a Martinez restaurant this morning, a Contra Costa County Fire Protection District spokesman said.

Fire crews responded around 9:05 a.m. to reports of a kitchen fire at Cinco de Mayo, located within a shopping center at 514 Center St., according to Fire Inspector Steve Aubert.

Kitchen staff who had been inside preparing food for the day were able to safely evacuate before crews arrived on scene, according to Aubert.

No injuries were reported in the fire. Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting through the back of the restaurant, Aubert said. He said the blaze appears to have started as a grease fire in the kitchen and spread upward.

Firefighters got the fire under control in about 15 minutes, Aubert said. The exact cause of the blaze remains under investigation and it is unknown when the eatery will be able to reopen.
