A fire shut down South State Street and a Chinese restaurant Wednesday afternoon shortly before evening rush hour began.
Ukiah Valley Fire Authority Division Chief Kirk Thomsen said the fire was reported around 4:50 p.m. July 23 at the Golden Penny and China Express, and appeared to have started in the kitchen of the restaurant, located in the 700 block of South State Street.
Thomsen said flames were coming through the vents, and firefighters were cutting through the roof to gain access to the building’s attic.
Owner Jialing Wang said no one was eating at the restaurant at the time of the fire, which he said was the first at the restaurant since he opened it in 1998.
Wang said he did not know what caused the fire, and he also did not know when he would be able to open again.
Multiple fire engines, from both UVFA and Cal Fire, responded to the fire, as well as the Ukiah Police Department, and officers blocked off South State Street at East Gobbi Street while firefighters worked.
