MUMBAI: A gas leak sparked a fire in a restaurant at Mira Road on Wednesday, injuring 14 persons, three of them seriously. The incident took place around 2.30pm in the Shanti Park area.
According to fire brigade personnel, the piped gas line of the restaurant was damaged during civic work at around 11am on Wednesday. Thereafter, Mahanagar gas officials visited the establishment and turned off the piped gas supply. They gave an assuarance that they would fix the supply by Thursday and that the restaurant needs to shut operations for the day.
“The restaurant management seems to have used a spare LPG cylinder and an old gas stove to continue with their operations. There was a gas leak in the kitchen, sparking a fire. The fire brigade was immediately informed. Most employees were trapped inside and had to be pulled out to safety,” said Prakash Borade, sub fire officer, Mira Road.
Those injured were rushed to the Tunga Hospital in Bhayander, where three of them are serious with 30% burns. The police will record statements of those injured and only then will the further course of action will be decided. While 13 of the victims were employees of the restaurant, one of the victims had come there to fetch an ice-cream when the fire broke out.
