Kitchen Fire at Restaurant Why you need to check the fire suppression system

04/07/2014 | Mike Erfert, Public Information Officer

On Sunday April 6, 2014, just before 10:00 A.M., a report of a kitchen fire was received from the Chretin’s Mexican Food restaurant, 505 East 16th Street. Arriving Yuma Fire Department personnel found light smoke coming from the building and the employees had evacuated the building.

Firefighters entered the building to find a cast iron skillet on the stove with flames (between 2 to 3 feet high) coming from it. The fire was quickly extinguished before it could spread to surrounding equipment. There were no injuries and investigators were looking into why the automatic extinguishing system in the stove hood did not discharge.

The restaurant was temporarily closed for repairs to the stove’s fire suppression system.
