Kitchen Duct fire ‘a bloody mess’

sherwood hotel fireFlames burned through the roof of a Queenstown hotel after a fire broke out in its kitchen yesterday.

Emergency services were called to the fire at the Discovery Sherwood Hotel in Frankton Rd about 5.15pm.

Fire Service communications southern shift manager Karl Patterson said three fire engines from Queenstown and one from Frankton were called to the hotel, finding the kitchen area well alight when they arrived.

A witness to the fire said flames were coming out of the kitchen roof, leaving the building “a bloody mess”.

Queenstown fire chief Terry O’Connell said the fire had spread from the kitchen into the roof space, but firefighters had the flames under control after about 15 minutes.

“It probably looks worse than what is is.”

He estimated about 10 per cent of the kitchen area was damaged, although the space would be “out of action for a while”.

No-one was injured during the fire, he said.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

A fire investigator was expected to visit the scene last night or this morning, Mr O’Connell said.

Hotel manager Dave Philpott was unavailable for comment last night, but an employee said though there was damage to the kitchen and restaurant area, all guests and staff had been safely evacuated.
